Introduction

Swadlincote Ski & Snowboard Centre is located in Swadlincote, South Derbyshire in the heart of the ‘National Forest’ area. The ‘National Forest’ is a project described as a ‘forest in the making’ transforming 200 square miles of Central England by blending new and maturing woodlands in a wide variety of landscapes.

The centre aims to attract a wide range of visitors and welcomes all people in society. The centre is continually working towards raising standards in visitor facilities and customer care.

Our centre aims to fully comply with the Disability Discrimination Act and endeavours to ensure that disabled people are not treated any less favourably than other visitors. We will also strive to ensure that ‘reasonable adjustments’ are made where appropriate to do so through sensitive and creative solutions. All staff will be happy to accommodate all specific needs where practicably possible to do so.

Pre-Arrival

  • Our website www.swadlincoteskislope.co.uk details all our activities, including operating terms and conditions, as well as our access statement.
  • Information can be provided in large print upon request.

  • Copies of the centre’s Risk Assessments are available on written request for all of the activities we offer.
  • We are 0.2 miles away from the nearest Bus stops, which run to Burton or Derby.
  • We are 5 miles away from Burton Train station.

Arrival and Car Parking Facilities

  • Access to our free car park is gained via Sir Herbert Wragg Way, just off the main A514 Swadlincote to Derby Road. The car park is laid with Tarmac and has a Disabled parking space nearest to the main entrance.
  • Access into the main building can be gained via 9 external steps or for wheelchair users via an ambulance ramp.

Main Entrance and Reception

  • Access into the reception area and ground floor of the main building, including Ski & Snowboard Hire and our Leisuresport World shop is via one step. A DDA approved access ramp for wheelchair users is available to negotiate this step and is positioned inside the main office. An assistance ‘bell’ is available to the right of the main entrance lobby to alert staff inside the building that assistance is required to put the ramp in place.
  • Access to the rear of the building, including vending machines and locker area is via a Tarmac path around the side of the main building. This path is 1.08m at it’s narrowest point. External viewing of some parts of the main slope and ‘Cresta Run’ Toboggan track is possible from the rear of the building.
  • The ground floor toilets and changing areas are accessed via entrance corridors with a width of 0.78m.

The ‘Alpine Lodge’ Restaurant & Bar

  • The Alpine Lodge is situation on the first floor of the building and is accessed via either a straight flight of 16 internal steps or 16 internal steps which include a curve midway.
  • An additional Fire Escape route for exit only, consists of 16 external steps.
  • First floor Male and Female toilets are accessed through doorways 0.78m in width.
  • Unfortunately we do not have lift or ramp access to the first floor of the building.

Activities

  • Swadlincote Ski & Snowboard Centre offers a variety of different activities. Each activity requires a varying degree of physical effort. We do not wish to be prescriptive as to which individuals are able to participate in each activity and try to assess each individual on a case by case basis. A member of the management team will be happy to discuss each activity in relation to any specific individual’s needs and abilities.
  • Access to the Toboggan run queuing area is via 7 external steps, a steep concrete ramp a Tarmac path and 6 further external steps.
  • Access to the Nursery slope area is via 7 External steps, a flat wooden bridge and a Tarmac path.
  • Access to the Main Slope for Skiers and Snowboarders is via a Zig-Zag path consisting of ski matting. This must be descended on ski’s or a snowboard.
  • Access to the Main Slope for Sno-Tubers is via 7 external steps, over a wooden bridge and includes a walk down a 15 degree slope gradient.
  • Skiing lessons are available for children from 4 yrs old.
  • Skiing requires a good level of leg strength and endurance. An adequate level of balance is also required. Shorter lessons can be arranged.
  • Snowboarding lessons are available for children from 10 years old. Snowboarding also requires a good balance, leg strength and endurance.
  • Toboggan has a minimum age of 4 years old. Children aged between 4 and 7 years old must ride with a responsible adult (16 years+). Children aged 8 and over must ride on their own.
  • The Toboggan cart is 132cm long and 46cm wide. The Toboggan requires the rider to be able to sit in an upright position unaided and be able to control balance. The braking mechanism is a simple lever. The lever is pushed down to release the brakes and pulled upwards towards the body to brake or stop the cart. As the rider has full control over the speed of the Toboggan the rider must have the physical and mental capacity to operate the ride safely. This is for the benefit of the rider and other riders participating in the activity.
  • Sno-tubing has a minimum age of 4 years. No physical effort is required to descend the slope. However access back up the slope requires walking up a gradient of 15 degrees. It may be possible for a rider to be pulled up the slope by an adult thus requiring no physical effort for the rider. The person pulling the rider would need to possess a good level of strength and physical fitness to achieve this. Notification prior to your arrival at the centre is advised.
